error when sending a message

Hi,
I tried a simple "Send Message" node but got the message:

Error sending message: UnknownDeviceError: This room contains unknown devices which have not been verified. We strongly recommend you verify them before continuing.

Could someone help me how to solve this issue. As far as I can see, all devices are verified.

How can I check and solve the issue?

Hi! This is coming from Matrix end-to-end encryption (E2EE) device trust.

Right now, node-red-contrib-matrix-chat does not have a device verification workflow implemented, so there’s currently no way to verify/“trust” devices from within Node-RED. Because of that, the safest recommendation for now is: don’t use E2EE rooms with the bot (use a non-encrypted room instead).

Also, encryption with a bot usually doesn’t buy you much in practice unless you’re going to manage trust correctly. The only “easy” workaround would be effectively auto-trusting/auto-accepting unknown devices, but if you go that route E2EE becomes mostly pointless because you’re implicitly trusting every device anyway.

I do want to support a proper verification workflow in the future, but I’ve struggled to get it working cleanly (and I’ve been busy with personal stuff / other projects lately).

After the holidays I’ll take another look and see if I can come up with something workable. Even if I do, keep in mind that a secure verification flow still needs an out-of-band confirmation step (e.g., verifying a token via another channel/app like email, Signal, etc.) to be meaningfully secure.

For now, the practical fix is to move the conversation to a non-encrypted room
