Opening Notebook in VSCode with Synapse doesn't work (on Mac)

Freshly downloading Synapse for VSCode from the Fabric extension, and then trying to select workspace, refresh connections, open a notebook from the fabric extension, or open a notebook from the portal all don't work.
Note, I didn't do any of the setup described here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/fabric/data-engineering/setup-vs-code-extension
